The Sea is the Limit, Group Exhibition, 2018
York City Art Gallery, York, UK
The Sea is the Limit was curated by artist Varvara Shavrova and organised in collaboration with Patrick Heide Contemporary Art where the show originated in November 2016 - January 2017.
This exhibition brought together art that explores the current and ongoing issues of migration, dispossession and national borders. The exhibition expressed a desire for freedom and a better life that stands in sharp contrast to the reality the migrants experience on their journeys. 'Sail Painting' is a large-scale site-specific installation that Susan recreated especially for this exhibition and placed in the impressive double height atrium space of York Art Gallery, bringing the outside scale of sailing boats directly into the gallery context. Susan also showed 'Trade Winds' a sculptural installation made from small money boats that sail across a sea of copper coins. One thousand pounds worth of penny pieces were used.
