Susan Stockwell Selected Works, Solo Exhibition, 2001
Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK
An exhibition of work that related to colonial history, mapping and geo-politics. The pieces were made with everyday materials such as used coffee filters, rubber inner tubes, dress making patterns and tea and other everyday materials and products.
The maps were part of a series made from materials that came from a country of continent or where there was a trading history or strong political connection to that place. The African map 'Rhino' made from rubber inner-tubes was a comment on near extinction of the African Rhino, who's skin looks like rubber and a play on the similarity in the shape of the Rhinos horn and the Horn of Africa.
