Boîte-en-Valise: Generator, Group Exhibition, 2017

Venice Biennale, Italy & Point of Contact Gallery Syracuse New York, USA, Syracuse, United States

Susan put a version of 'Sail Away' into the small palace in Venice and 'Dream Boat' a new work made in collaboration with Abisay Puente, a Syracuse based Cuban artist at Point of Contact Gallery.

A collective of 6 international contemporary artists took this exhibition from the United Kingdom to the 2017 Venice Biennale and then to Point of Contact Gallery and Syracuse University, USA.

Boîte-en-Valis: Generator encouraged transportability of practice and the nurturing of collaboration and cross-fertilisation of artistic practice. The artists worked with individuals and communities in Portsmouth with Aspex Gallery and Syracuse with Point of Contact Gallery to develop the work.

Each of the six artist transported the means to generate their work in Venice and Syracuse in a normal sized suitcase, which went as luggage on a flight, train, boat, car and bus journey and was taken from the suitcase for presentation and development in the two venues.

In Syracuse Susan collaborated with a Cuban artist called Abisay Puente who had migrated from Cuba and settled in Syracuse. The text drawn in charcoal on the wall behind the boat by Abisay tells the moving story of his journey from Cuba to the USA and his subsequent settlement. The audience were encouraged to read Abisey's story, sit in the boat and write their dreams on a piece of paper and leave it behind in the boat.

These by then seven artists brought together works including sculpture, performance, video, photography, story telling and sound as well as collaborations, interventions and conversations.

Both of Susan's works in these particular contexts primarily dwell on the urgent experience of migrancy in our own times and provoke questions about boundaries, borders, and ecological shortfalls; aspects that evoke, expose and challenge features of social, racial and gender inequality and injustice.
