Where Are You?

Date: 2000

Description: This Installation was part of the exhibition 'Subway Special A Democratic Platform' at Aldgate Tube Station, London. Curated by Stephanie James and Frank Brown.

Material: Fresh Lilies

Provenance: London, UK

Notes: The ticket office was packed full of lilies so the door couldn’t be opened and the smell became overpowering. The flowers slowly decayed over the course of the exhibition. 'Where Are you?' was a memorial to my mother who had died earlier that year. It was about her the absence. The disused tube station felt like a mausoleum, a somber cenotaph, full of ghosts and shadows of people from times gone. I chose cut Lilies as they are symbols of rebirth and motherhood in some cultures and of death and the souls departure in others. The strong scent and gradual rotting and decaying was an essential part of the work.
