Dream Boat in Boîte-en-Valise: Generator, Syracuse
This piece was a collaboration between Susan & Abisay Puentes. It consisted of an old, found wooden clinker boat and a wall of text written in charcoal.
'Dream Boat' was made for the exhibition Boîte-en-Valise: Generator at Point of Contact Gallery in Syracuse USA. It was a collaboration between Susan and the Syracuse based Cuban artist Abisay Puentes. Participants were invited to sit in the boat and write their dreams on paper, leaving them behind in the boat, Abisey wrote the poignant story of his migration journey from Cuba to America on the wall behind the boat in charcoal.
A collective of 6 international contemporary artists took this exhibition from the United Kingdom to the 2017 Venice Biennale and then to Point of Contact Gallery and Syracuse University, USA. Boîte-en-Valise: Generator encouraged transportability of practice and the nurturing of collaboration and cross-fertilisation of artistic practice. The artists worked with individuals and communities in Portsmouth with Aspex Gallery and Syracuse with Point of Contact Gallery to develop the work. Each artist transported the means to generate their work in Venice and Syracuse in a normal sized suitcase, which went as luggage on a flight, train and bus journey and was taken from the suitcase for presentation and development in the two venues. These six artists brought together works including sculpture, performance, video, photography and sound as well as collaborations, interventions and conversations. In Syracuse Abisay Puentes joined the exhibition in a collaboration with Susan.
